Barcelona, Spain October 15-19 2022

Updated: Nov 21, 2022

Barcelona was founded about 10 BC by Romans. It would like to be independent of Spain, even has its own language. The dictator, Marco (1930-1970) was super down on Barcelona's desire for independence and did things like outlaw their language and books.

Plaça de Catalunya is the center of the city where the neighborhoods originate. There are fountains and sculptures, also a public transit hub. Our last hotel overlooked it and it was a center of activity all night. We could hear people visiting ALL night, but it was all very peaceful. This is a photo of part of the square taken from our room.

Las Ramblas, or La Rambla is a major touristy street that shoots out of Plaça de Catalunya and continues until the Christopher Columbus statue at the water(Mediterranean Ocean). It has a pedestrian way in the center with wavy stonework that reminds all that this was once a stream. Rambla means stream in Arabic.

I also liked the permanent chair’s scattered along the pedestrian way and the diverse people who occupied them.

Mark and I on Las Ramblas

Tile work done by Joan Miro on Las Ramblas-also check out the umbrella building .

La Boqueria Market also located off Las Ramblas, is where there are vendors with foods from local- yes those are emu eggs.

CHOC- Best Barcelona Bakery- had Frappes and a GF Store too!!

Art on building by Pablo Picasso

Typical street in El Born or Gothic Quarter neighborhood off Las Ramblas

We also saw architecture by Antoni Gaudi. He is a famous Catalan architect, probably most known for the church pictures above, La Sagrada Familia. He was obsessed with his work and inspired by nature. He died by getting hit by a tram in1926 before his famous (still unfinished) church was complete. Legend says that by then he was so focused on his work he didn’t notice his own appearance, dressed like a bum and his medical care was delayed because no one knew who he was.

La Sagrada Familia

Park Güell also designed by Antoni Gaudi was a “community" designed by Gaudi, now a park. The bench was más comfortable.

Gaudi design was whimsical!

Sephora Flagship store in Barcelona had a slide to enter the store. Had to bully Mark to take photo- but now he says it is on of his favorites.
